Doll: RS An
Face-up: *PrincessAbiliss

Just playing with my new lens a little more. I am really liking it actually. It is not good for small macro things, like smaller figures like my other macro lens, but it is good for my dolls which is the main thing I take photo's of. It also does nice portraits of people as well.

EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone who has commented and faved this picture! I am so shocked that people like this much. I don't think I have ever had a doll photo with this many faves, especailly this quickly! I hardly ever get this many faves on my art, and my doll photo's are less popular! Thanks again! I am so happy!

I have a question...

Am I allowed to use this picture as reference for a drawing?

Is it just for drawing practise? If it is just for practise then go for it.

However if you are going to use the likeness of her for something I would need more details. :) If it is going to be anything for profit then no.

Not for profit...heck no...I doubt people would really want to pay for my stuff anyway...

Just for practice really...trying to work on my digital stuff...

If it is just for practise then sure go for it. Sometimes you do have to double check though since people have done that before. I had a friend who took really nice pictures of dolls and one artists copied the pictures and painted them onto canvas. She then went on to try and sell them for rather a lot of money. I know most people are honest people, but I think it is a good idea to be clear sometimes.

I hope you have a lot of fun, and good luck with your drawing. :)

I see, that is cool then!

Sadly there is another person doing it to doll owners, he is even doing a kickstarter. Sadly people are like that, but if your intentions are just for some practise it is really not a problem. :) Thank you for asking me about it too, that was polite of you. I would love to see what you do actually! :)

Oh yes, it really isn't. Luckily his kickstarter has been taken down, his stuff is still up on Facebook and here though!

That is really good, that goes down much better because it shows you have respect for original artists.

Honestly though, it is a "cheep" Chinese doll, who happens to be an unpopular sculpt. Who I have just popped up in my room with a messy background (the lens blurs out the mess) and took a picture! This stuff normally doesn't get attention!

I am really happy you like the colour contrasts, that is really useful to know. Although Scops does have the bright red hair and the bright green eyes all the time ^^; It will be nice to know what makes this one "good" and above my others because I would like to repeat it on future works.

The only different thing I have is a new lens!

Overall, I think it really is more about the individual dolls and the composition/photography than the sculpts. Customized dolls sometimes also draw more attention than default ones, and Scops' unique faceup and quality clothing help set her apart from the BBB/RS masses. A lot of people probably wouldn't even recognize her sculpt right away, so they wouldn't judge her on it (although honestly I think most people are perfectly willing to appreciate BBB/RS dolls...there are just a lot of cruddy n00b shots of the same dolls to be paged through. A good picture of a pretty doll is a good picture of a pretty doll). Same goes for my own least popular "cheap Chinese" sculpt, Darcy, a Resinsoul Mai. I was also surprised and thrilled at the positive reception when I posted my first set of pictures of him to the gallery on DoA :)

Thanks so much, and I do get what you are saying. However any of my dolls getting this much attention has never happened to me before. All of them are customized to a degree and only 2 of my 8 dolls have company face ups. My Shushu people tell me they forget she is a Shushu because she looks so different to all the other ones.

I always do my best to dress dolls well and to their character and I am just unsure why this photo has more attention then my others. It is baffling really.

For some reason, this picture above my others has got a lot more attention then I am used to. I am very happy about it, I just wish I knew why. So I could repeat the results. It has made me really happy that people have really liked this photo.

I see, there are some really nice glass eyes on Ebay. The only problem with Ebay is some stores have better quality eyes then others. Some are lovely, some are dull. Best of luck though, I hope you find a really nice pair!

It was for an old pantax camera. However because a cannon camera has such a wide space for a lens, unlike a Nikkon then you can get adaptors so the older lens will sit where they are meant to.

I know it was a 50mm lens with a very shallow depth of field, I think it has a f1.8 I could be wrong. The lens I have from the old camera's tend to be Russian so they have different numbers and settings and are a bit different.

Oooh I have a 50mm lens too, that's the one I usually use for doll pictures as well! XD My sister who is into photography recommended it to me and since they had one that wasn't terribly expensive at the time I went for it. It seems to do the best in indoor lighting and is about the right distance.

It's cool that you are adapting old lenses, I never even thought about doing that.

I see that is cool, I didn't think about adapting old lens until I was looking for a 50mm for my camera. At the time it was hard to get them because a lot of the parts are made in Japan and it wasn't long after the Tsunami they had, so there was a shortage. So the camera shop told me about adapting old lenses.

The old lens are so much cheaper too, they cost between 15-30 the ones I have bought plus 15 for the adaptor, but you can use the adaptor for all the lens from the older camera. Well as long as they are the same make, but Pantax have a lot of lenses.
